Niti Shatakam is truly a unique book. Whenever we sit to recite it with concentration, it seems as if whatever is great in the world, whatever is beautiful and whatever is new, innocent, pure and charming, all of it has been collected together and placed in the same manner at the place where its beauty and purity can be enhanced by its inclusion. Although there are hundred verses in “Niti Shatak”, whatever has been said in these hundred verses cannot be compared even with hundred policy texts of other countries.

While living in the world, to be victorious in life, it is very necessary to be righteous. With ethics, even if we are alone, we can defeat an infinite army and can rule the whole world sitting at one place. The better a person is a policy maker, the more difficult he is to defeat. In short, the most complex problems of the world can be solved only by ethics. Mahatma Shukra has rightly said that grammar gives us knowledge of words and meanings, logic and reasoning give us knowledge of the objects of the world and Vedanta gives us knowledge of the emptiness of the world and the impermanence of the body; but these scriptures serve no purpose in worldly affairs. The thing that is required to carry out worldly affairs and to live a happy life is “Ethics”. It is equally important for everyone from the king living in a palace to the small man living in a hut. Therefore, it should be said that ethics has an incomparable significance.

In Sanskrit literature, Vidur Niti, Bhartrihari Niti and Chanakya Niti are especially respected. Among them, the learned people respect Bhartrihari Niti more than any other Niti. That is why we have called it an incomparable book of ethics.

In ‘Niti shatakam’, the poet has urged to adopt noble qualities like altruism, bravery, courage, industry, generosity, which can lead to welfare of the entire humanity. The poet is in favour of making the rare human life meaningful by acquiring virtues. In his opinion, ‘a person who does not accumulate virtues even after getting a rare human body is as ridiculous as a fool who cooks garlic with sandalwood in a vessel made of vaidurya-mani, or who ploughs the land with a golden plough to get the root of aak (ak).’ In his opinion, man needs diverse skills to survive in this world.
