Mimamsa Philosophy (Scripture) in English

When there were many objections on the Vedas and Vedic religion, at that time Mimamsa philosophy was composed. The main subject in Mimamsa is religion. According to this philosophy, “Yato’bhyudayanihshreyasah siddhih sa dharmah” means that which leads to welfare in this world and the next world is called religion.

The main subjects of Mimamsa Shastra are to know ‘Dharma’ and to think about the meaning of Vedas. Vedas are the form of knowledge, hence Mimamsa Shastra, which thinks about the meaning of Vedas, is also called philosophy. Since thinking about religion is necessary in all ways, physical, verbal and mental.

The inner conscience can be purified through Mimamsa Shastra, i.e. Mimamsa Shastra prepares the ground for spiritual thinking. Therefore, there should be no objection in calling it philosophy. Mimamsa means thinking about the meaning of religion or Vedas. It is called Purva Mimamsa because before thinking about knowledge, rituals and religion are considered. Only after this, a seeker can understand about the soul as told in Vedanta. Hence Mimamsa is called Purva Mimamsa and Vedanta is called Uttar Mimamsa.

The ultimate goal of Mimamsa philosophy is to attain heaven. This is the ultimate state of worldly viewpoint because ordinary people consider heaven to be the ultimate position. Mimamsa has 12 subjects. These are, Dharma-Jigyasa, Karma-Bhed, Shreyatva, Usable-Useful Bhaav, Karma in Karmas, Adhikar General, Special, Atidarsham, Oh, Badh, Tantra and Awaab. All these are related to Yagya and the mantras of the Vedas.
