The Mandukya-Upanisad is the shortest amongst the principal Upanisads having just 12 mantras but presents the quintessence of our entire teaching of Upanisads. It analyses the entire range of human consciousness in the three states of waking (jagrata)dream (swapna) and dreamless sleep (susupti) which are common to all humans. It asserts un-eqivocally that the Absolute Reality is non-dual(advaita) and attribute-less (nirguna). It has a unique method of approach to Truth. It provides symbol to for meditation in the mono-syllable AUM comprising of three sounds A,U,M,detailing it’s philosophical implications.According to Muktikopanisad,it forms the epitome of all the hundred and eight Upanisads which have been accepted as authentic.

Mandukyo Upanishad (Mandukya Upanishad in English) is written in Sanskrit language. Its authors are considered to be the sages of the Vedic period. It describes the four states of the soul or consciousness – waking, dreaming, deep sleep and turiya. This Upanishad of only twelve mantras included in the first ten Upanishads is the smallest in terms of size but its place is high in terms of importance, because without any elaboration, the spiritual knowledge has been filled in these mantras in the form of a sweet formula.

It is said in this Upanishad that the eternal element which is present everywhere in the world and in the past, future and present times and even beyond them is Om. All this is Brahma and this soul is also Brahma. Mandukyo Upanishad is taken from the Brahman part of the Atharvaveda.

The theme of the Mandukya Upanishad (Mandukya Upanishad in English) is an interpretation of the mystic syllable, Om, with a view to training the mind in meditation, with the aim of attaining freedom, gradually, so that the individual soul may be united with the Ultimate Reality. The basis of this meditation is explained in a Vidya (meditation), known as the Vaishnavara Vidya. This is the secret of the knowledge of the Universal Being designated as Vaishnavara. The simplest form of its understanding is the transference of human qualities to the Divine Being, and vice versa. In this meditation one sees the universe as one’s own body.
