In the Dravidian country, a Pandyan dynasty king Indradyumna was the supreme devotee of Lord Vishnu. King Indradyumna had renounced the kingdom and was doing penance by living on the Malay mountain. King Indradyumna was always engrossed in the worship of Parambrahma Paramatma Shri Hari Vishnu.

Once by chance Maharishi Agastya along with all his disciples reached King Indradyumna. The silent king Indradyumna was in the meditation of Parambrahma Paramatma. King Indradyumna did not welcome Maharishi Agastya Padha, nor Arghya. Seeing this, Maharishi Agastya, considering it an insult, cursed the king in anger to get the vagina of a very ignorant elephant. King Indradyumna accepted it considering it as the law of Shri Vishnu.
In the dense forest of the mountain named Trikut, along with the elephants, there lived an elephant named Gajendra, very powerful and very mighty. Distraught with the intensity of thirst, Gajendra along with his companions reached the banks of the lake. As soon as Trisha Bujha entered the lake, suddenly a crocodile came and grabbed her leg. Gajendra tried a lot to get rid of the leg but he could not control it, the leg did not leave. Due to the curse of Maharishi Agatsya, King Indradyumna was in the form of Gajendra.
Gajendra’s life was in danger, the pride of bravery was shattered. But as a result of continuous devotion to Vishnu in the previous birth, Gajendra remembered Bhagavatsmriti. Gajendra concentrated his mind and started praising Lord Vishnu through the best source learned in his previous birth.
Hearing Gajendra’s praise, Lord Vishnu was pleased and freed Gajendra by tearing the crocodile’s mouth from the wheel. Lord Vishnu said in front of everyone – You were praised after getting up in Brahma Muhurta.
Pleased with the praise of Gajendra, Lord Vishnu said in front of everyone – “Dear Gajendra! Those who wake up in Brahma Muhurta and praise you (Gajendra Moksha Stotra), I will give them a pure intellect at the time of death.
