Dhanurveda presents a complete system of Indian warfare, ranging from individual self-defense to collective warfare tactics. It has four major parts: Yantra Vidya (i.e. knowledge of weapons), Astra Vidya (i.e. knowledge of weapons), Vyuha Vidya (i.e. strategy) and Mantra Vidya (i.e. use of mental power). This text not only emphasizes physical training, but also suggests measures for mental and spiritual development, so that a warrior becomes strong not only externally but also internally.
Dhanurveda is one of the most established and famous branches of ancient Indian science. Nowadays, the books of this branch have almost disappeared. It is rare to see any copy other than two fictional books in the libraries. The destruction of this knowledge has caused a great loss to the country. Today, no one is seen wielding a bow like the Arjuna whose arrow’s power was spoken about by Bhishma Pitamah in the Mahabharata–
कृन्तन्ति मम गात्राणि माघमासे गवामिव ।
अर्जुनस्य इमे वाणाः नेमे वाणाः शिखण्डिनः ॥
Kritanti Mam Gaatraani Maghmaase Gavamiv.
Arjunasya Ime Vaanaah Neme Vaanaah Shikhandinah.
The importance of Dhanurveda is found everywhere in our Vedas, scriptures and Puranas. Its importance has been mentioned in the Ashwamedha Yagna chapter in the sixteenth and seventeenth chapters of the Yajurveda. The importance of the bow has been described in the fourth, sixth and sixth mantras of the thirty-first Sukta of the fourth canto of the Atharvaveda and in the second, sixth, eighth, ninth, twelfth and sixty-sixth mantras of the sixtieth Sukta. -Seventh, eleventh, fifteenth and eighteenth cantos. The name of Dhanurveda is respectfully mentioned in the second chapter, fifth and sixth sections of Naigama Kanda of Nirukta. In Srauta-Sutras like Shankhayana, the bow-bearer is also mentioned in the case of Ashwamedha.
The importance of the bow and its discussion are often mentioned in the Puranas, especially in the Agni Purana. Thus, in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, there is a fascinating description of the bow battle. This shows that this Veda was widely propagated in ancient times. This is the Dhanurveda, the Upveda of the Yajurveda. The originator of this Dhanurveda is Lord Shiva. His disciple was Parashurama. Thus, in the lineage of his disciples, Lord Ramachandra, Laxman, Drona, Acharya, Arjun and other heroes became famous archers.
