Adbhut Ramayan in English

With the influence of Valmiki’s Adi Ramayan, the Rama story gradually became more widespread and popular. After Rama was established as an incarnation of Vishnu, the material on the Rama story gradually increased in the later Puranas and Upapuranas, especially in the Skanda Purana, Padma Purana and Mahabhagvat Purana etc. Many works on Rama, communal Ramayanas also started being composed independently. Among such Sanskrit religious literature on Rama, Adhyatma Ramayana, Adbhut Ramayan and Anand Ramayana are especially notable.

Adbhut Ramayan seems to be mostly influenced by Adhyatma Ramayana. A true description of the original form of Lord Shri Rama has been given in Adhyatma Ramayana. In Adbhutma Ramayana, the original form of Mother Sita is described as Adishakti. This shows that Adbhutma Ramayana must have been composed some time after the composition of Adhyatma Ramayana. The influence of the Adbhut Ramayan is clearly visible in the first part of Ramcharitmanas (1532 to 1623 AD). From this point of view, it is believed that this book must have been composed in the 14th or 15th century in North India.

Many handwritten copies of Adbhut Ramayan are available. But there are only two published versions. (1) Published from Banaras in 1882 and (2) The second published from Bombay Venkateshwar Press in 1958. Both these versions are unavailable today.

Adbhut Ramayan has a total of 27 cantos, in which the total number of verses is 1353. This small work has been presented in the form of Valmiki-Bhardwaj-dialogue. In this work, the wonderful form and valour of Mother Sita has been described, from this point of view, its title ‘Adbhut Ramayan’ seems to be true. Sita kills Sahasravadan Ravana by assuming a fierce form, then Shri Ram praises Mother Sita, who is the embodiment of Shakti, with ‘Sahasranam’. This stotra can be compared with Lalita Sahasranam Stotra. It is said that whoever recites or gets this stotra, designated as ‘Adbhut Stotra’, recites, attains the supreme position.

The story of Adbhut Ramayan can be divided into three sections. The background is presented in the first canto. And the reasons for the birth of Shri Ram and Mother Sita are told in cantos 2 to 8. Due to the curse of Narada and Parvat, Vishnu has to take incarnation in the form of Ram. A new story is given as the reason for Sita’s birth. Due to being insulted in heaven, Narada curses Lakshmi, due to which she is born on earth as Mandodari’s daughter. This story of Narada’s curse, described in the original Shiva Purana, is found in both the Adbhut Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas, but the story of Ramcharitmanas has more similarity with the story of Shiva Purana.
