Shrimad Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana in English

Just as Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran is at the top in the list of eighteen Puranas, similarly Shrimad Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana (Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana in English) also has the same importance and recognition as a Mahapuran. The worshippers of Shakti call this Purana ‘Shakta Bhagwat’. The glory of Goddess Adyashakti has been described everywhere – in the beginning, middle and end of this Mahapuran. The deeds of Goddess Adyashakti are endless, the proof of those deeds has been the main subject of this book.

In fact, that Mahashakti is revered as Param Brahma, who keeps doing various activities in different forms. With her power, Brahma creates the universe, Vishnu protects it and Shiva destroys it, hence she is the Adi Narayani Shakti who creates, nurtures and destroys the world. These are the Mahashaktis who are depicted in the form of nine Durgas and ten Mahavidyas.

At the end of each chapter of the 18 main Puranas or Upapuranas there is this shloka “This is the end of the fifth section of Vishnu Purana“, or “Thus ends the first chapter of Ganesha Purana Upasanakhanda “Description of Somakanta”. While in Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana it is clear – “Thus ends the eighth chapter of the first skandha of the Mahapurana Srimad Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana containing 18,000 verses composed by Maharshi Vedavyas”. The choice of words by the great sages is clear because the Divine Mother is described in all major scriptures as beyond and above the Tridevas and all deities. Srimad Bhagavatam is for Vaishnavas, Devi Bhagavatam is for Shaktas.

The Srimad Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana (Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana in English) composed by the divine genius of Maharshi Vyas is divided into 12 skandhas (chapters), and has a total of 18,000 verses. This text is composed by Maharshi Vedavyas. Though it is considered to be the most revered among the great sages, it is divided into 12 skandhas (chapters), and has a total of 18,000 verses. Classified as a sub-Purana, it is the only Purana that Vedavyas called “Mahapurana” i.e. great Purana. This Mahapurana is especially known for praising the glory and power of the Goddess. It is also known as Devi Bhagavat or Devi Purana. It describes the various forms of the Goddess and their stories, which inspire the devotees towards reverence and devotion.

This Purana describes the various forms of the Goddess such as Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kali etc. and narrates the stories of their importance, power and their grace on the devotees. It includes many mythological stories that reflect the glory and power of the Goddess. Some of the major stories are the story of Goddess Sati, the penance of Parvati, Durgasaptashati etc. Devi Bhagavat Mahapuran describes various methods of worship and adoration of the Goddess, which includes mantras, stotras, havans, and various measures of worship.
